Mak Fai
Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon and Lion Dance Association has been part of Seattle’s fabric for 50 years having performed thousands of Lion dances over the years, bringing good luck and blessings at weddings, birthdays, graduation, corporate events, etc. For the past year I’ve been documenting their practices and performances around Seattle.
Background
Besides ordering har gau and siu mai at dim sum (and counting to 10), I don’t speak a lick of Cantonese and neither does my dad, nor my late grandma. This is the case for many 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen people in Hawaii. Despite this, my dad started doing Kung Fu when he was 19 in 1977 and has been doing it ever since, and it’s a passion he’s passed down to me as well. I started Kung Fu and lion dance when I was 6 years old but eventually gave it up in high school to pursue other interests such as film photography. I’ve been making film photos on-and-off for 12 years now, but it was only last year that I decided to dive into documentary photography. My first instinct was to find something I used to be passionate about, which is why I reached out to Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon and Lion Dance Association to document the club and create a photography zine for them. After starting the project, I soon learned that Sigung (grandmaster) Mak Fai trained together with my Sifu (master) Seng Au in the 70s, which was a clear sign that I needed to further pursue this project and reconnect with my roots.
